How to renew your non-lucrative residence after year one in Spain

The first renewal is where your Spanish residence file is tested again: updated money, active health insurance, real residence in Spain and a clean administrative timeline.

The first non-lucrative visa approval gets you into Spain, but the first renewal is what turns the move into a stable residence path. Many retirees and passive-income residents treat renewal as a simple card extension. It is more than that. The Spanish office will look again at whether you still have sufficient means, whether your health insurance is suitable, whether you are really resident in Spain and whether your documents explain the year clearly.

This guide is about the year-two renewal: the renewal after the initial one-year non-lucrative residence authorisation. It is different from the consulate application abroad. You are already in Spain, your first TIE is approaching expiry, and the evidence now includes not only bank balances and pensions, but also how you have actually lived since arrival.

Lola Jurado, immigration lawyer

"A renewal should not feel like rebuilding the case from zero. If the first year is documented properly, the file becomes a clear continuation."

When to start

Do not begin renewal work when your TIE has already expired. The practical work should start several months earlier: confirm your expiry date, check the province where you will file, review the current financial requirement, renew or update your health insurance and collect evidence of residence. If you moved house, changed insurer, spent significant time outside Spain or changed the structure of your income, those facts should be organised before filing.

The official renewal process is linked to the expiry of the current residence authorisation. The file should be prepared early enough that the filing itself is not rushed. For a couple or family, each person needs to be accounted for. A dependent spouse or child is not just a name in the main applicant's file; the household means, insurance and residence pattern must make sense for the whole group.

Core documents for the renewal

The official Migraciones information sheet for the renewal of temporary non-lucrative residence refers to the EX-01 form, a complete copy of the passport or valid travel document, evidence of sufficient economic resources and evidence of health insurance for the period for which renewal is requested. Depending on the facts, additional evidence may be needed: padrón, housing documents, family documentation, proof of school attendance for minors, updated certificates, bank statements, pension letters or explanation of time outside Spain.

Foreign documents may need legalisation or apostille and sworn translation when they are used in Spain. If your financial evidence is from the United States, the United Kingdom, Canada, Australia or another non-Spanish source, do not assume the document will be self-explanatory to the Spanish office. A clean file explains source, regularity, currency, owner and availability.

Official-source check: before drafting this page we reviewed the current Migraciones renewal sheet for non-lucrative residence and the official Tasa 052 page for residence authorisation fees. Always confirm the current version before filing.

Financial means for the renewed period

The renewal is not only about showing that the first year went well. You must show sufficient resources for the period you are asking Spain to renew. That is why renewal files often need stronger forward-looking evidence than applicants expect. A single bank screenshot is weaker than a structured package showing pensions, Social Security, investment income, rental income, annuity payments, account balances and how those resources cover the renewed residence period.

For retirees, the strongest evidence usually separates recurring income from reserves. Recurring income may include pensions, Social Security, annuities or regular investment distributions. Reserves may include savings, brokerage balances or other liquid assets. If the applicant is relying heavily on portfolio withdrawals, the file should explain liquidity and sustainability without making the person look like they are actively working in Spain.

Evidence typeWhat the renewal file should make clear
Pension or Social SecurityGross amount, net amount, frequency, beneficiary and continuity.
Investment incomeWhether it is dividends, interest, distributions or planned withdrawals.
Savings or brokerage balancesOwnership, availability, currency and whether funds are liquid.
Rental incomeLease terms, net income after expenses and whether management is passive.
Family household meansHow the main applicant and dependants are covered together.

Health insurance continuity

Health insurance is one of the easiest renewal points to get wrong. Applicants sometimes buy a policy for the consulate application and then change to a cheaper product after arrival. For renewal, the issue is not only whether you have a card from an insurer. The policy should still be suitable for non-lucrative residence: cover in Spain, no problematic co-payments or exclusions, and enough continuity to show that health cover has not lapsed.

If you have moved into a public healthcare entitlement through another route, or if your family members have different coverage, document the exact basis clearly. For most non-lucrative retirees, private coverage remains the central evidence. Keep certificates, renewal receipts, policy conditions and proof that all family members are included.

Residence in Spain and time abroad

The non-lucrative authorisation is a residence authorisation. Renewal is easier when your file shows that Spain has genuinely been your home: padrón, lease or property documents, utility bills, bank activity, medical records, local registrations, school records for children and ordinary evidence of day-to-day life. The goal is not to overwhelm the office with every receipt; it is to show a coherent residence story.

Time outside Spain should be reviewed carefully. Long absences can create questions, especially if the pattern makes Spain look like a seasonal base rather than a residence. The current renewal rule now deserves its own day-count review: see our note on the 183-day real-residence test for non-lucrative renewal and why it is not identical to Spanish tax residency. There are also separate rules to consider when planning the long-term path to permanent residency. If the first year included extended travel for family, health, property sale or business wind-down reasons, explain the timeline and keep objective evidence.

The best renewal file reads like a timeline: first TIE, address, insurance, income, residence activity and the plan for the renewed period.

Where and how the renewal is filed

The renewal is handled in Spain, usually through the competent immigration office for your province, with electronic filing often used when the applicant has digital certificate access or files through a professional representative. You should confirm the current local practice for your province because appointment systems, electronic workflow and document expectations can vary.

The Tasa 052 is the residence authorisation fee commonly associated with these immigration procedures. The official Administraciones Publicas page allows payment and electronic registration or generation of the form to print and pay. Select the correct province and fee concept; do not reuse an old fee receipt from a different procedure.

Decision timing and administrative silence

The official renewal information sheet refers to a three-month resolution period from filing. It also indicates that, if the administration has not notified a decision after that period, the application may be understood as approved by administrative silence. In practice, do not treat silence as a reason to improvise. If the three-month period passes without a decision, ask how to evidence the status, whether a certificate should be requested and how to coordinate the next TIE step.

This is the reverse of what you met on the way in. At the initial consular stage, silence is negative — no answer means refused — while here at renewal it can be positive. That inversion catches applicants out, so if the two rules feel contradictory, our page on administrative silence and the non-lucrative visa sets the initial-stage rule out in full.

Keep the filing receipt and any electronic notifications. Check notification channels regularly. A missed request for additional documentation can damage an otherwise strong renewal file, especially if the deadline to answer expires while the applicant is travelling.

The new TIE card after approval

Approval of the renewal is not the final physical step. Official guidance states that within one month from notification of renewal, the foreign resident must request the renewed foreigner's identity card at the competent police office. This is a new TIE card process: appointment, form, fee, passport, photos, old card and approval evidence as required by the office.

Do not confuse the legal authorisation renewal with the card renewal. The administrative decision renews your residence authorisation; the police appointment produces the physical card you will use in daily life. If you plan travel shortly after approval, check card timing and re-entry position before leaving Spain.

Common renewal mistakes

The most common mistakes are predictable: starting too late, relying on the same evidence used at the consulate without updating it, showing insurance with gaps or co-payments, ignoring time outside Spain, using unclear bank screenshots, missing electronic notifications, paying the wrong fee concept or forgetting that a new TIE card is needed after approval.

For US retirees, another frequent issue is tax and income presentation. Social Security, IRA distributions, brokerage withdrawals and foreign rental income may all support the renewal, but they should be presented in a way that fits the immigration rule and does not accidentally suggest employment activity in Spain. Immigration evidence and tax evidence should be coordinated, not treated as separate worlds.

One quieter mistake belongs here too, because it is invisible until it is not. Article 31.7.b) of the LOEX says that renewal weighs any failure to comply with the applicant's obligations in tax and Social Security matters. A non-lucrative resident normally has no Social Security obligations at all — with one exception: the moment someone cleans, gardens or provides care at the house, the household becomes an employer and registration is compulsory from the first hour. An unregistered cleaner is not a labour-law detail sitting off to one side of the file; it is the only Social Security obligation the applicant has, unmet, in a status where compliance is expressly weighed. See hiring a housekeeper, carer or gardener on a non-lucrative visa.

Frequently asked questions

Can I renew the non-lucrative visa from outside Spain?

The renewal is a Spanish residence procedure handled in Spain. If you are abroad close to expiry, get advice before assuming you can manage the process from another country.

Do I need a padrón certificate for renewal?

It is often useful evidence of residence and address. Local practice can vary, so confirm what your province requests and keep your municipal registration current.

Will the renewal be refused if I travelled during the first year?

Travel is not automatically a problem, but long or repeated absences can raise questions. The file should show that Spain remained your residence and explain any unusual absence pattern.

Is the renewal financial requirement the same as the first application?

The logic is similar, but the renewal must cover the renewed period and should use current figures. Confirm the applicable IPREM-based amount before filing.

What if I changed health insurance companies?

A change is not automatically fatal, but keep proof of continuity and make sure the new policy still fits the non-lucrative residence standard.
